Overview

Nestled in the heart of North Melbourne, Char Siu House is a Chinese restaurant that captures the essence of traditional Chinese roasting and classic homestyle flavors. Located at 37 Errol Street, this unassuming spot is quickly earning a loyal following for its authentic dishes and warm atmosphere.

Char Siu House’s strength lies in its expertly prepared roast meats. The standout offerings include succulent roast duck, tender soya chicken, and the signature BBQ pork char siu, all served with perfectly steamed rice and fresh vegetables. Fans of rich, savory flavors will appreciate the crispy roast pork, which delivers a satisfying crunch without sacrificing tenderness. Their roast meat meals, available with one or two kinds of roast paired with rice, offer a comforting, hearty experience reminiscent of family-style dining.

The menu extends beyond roast meats to include a diverse array of classic Chinese dishes. The Hainanese Chicken Rice stands out for its fragrant aroma and moist texture, while the fried rice noodles tossed in black bean sauce present a delightful umami punch. Other highlights such as shredded duck fried rice and sweet-sour pork balance flavor and texture with finesse. Complementing these mains are flavorful appetizers like satay chicken skewers and pan-fried pork dumplings, which set the tone for the meal with freshness and bold taste.

What makes Char Siu House especially appealing is the blend of quality and value. Diners frequently praise the generous portion sizes matched with approachable pricing, making it an ideal choice for both casual dinners and small group feasts. The service is prompt and friendly, reflecting the warmth of the staff and enhancing the overall dining experience.

Patrons describe the environment as inviting and lively, with a steady crowd of locals and take-away customers affirming the place’s popularity. Whether you’re craving the unmistakable flavor of perfectly roasted meats or looking for a reliable, authentic Chinese meal away from the hustle of bigger, more tourist-driven venues, Char Siu House offers a genuine taste of home cooking.

In short, Char Siu House is a must-visit for anyone seeking satisfying, flavorful Chinese cuisine in a welcoming setting. From the aromatic tea to the deeply savory roast pork and beyond, the rich variety of dishes and genuine hospitality combine to create a memorable dining experience that keeps customers returning time and again.

Their fried rice is absolutely divine—it's definitely the standout dish here! We can’t get enough of it and find ourselves craving it every now and then. While the other dishes are decent for the price, nothing quite compares to that fried rice that comes with meat combo. Highly recommend giving it a try

Staff was so generous and kind, and everything was delicious. It tastes classic and reliable. A good spot from yum cha, as recommended by locals. Probably better than some other, more famous spots. It feels authentic. Not to mention, super quick service and quite affordable for how fresh it is. Great portions also!

I was here for a low-key dinner feast, and it was awesome. The dishes were super delicious my goodness, I couldn’t even decide what to order! We ended up getting six dishes between the two of us. The food was so good that even when we were full, we kept eating. The place seriously smelled like food heaven. The crispy pork and soy chicken !!! If you’ve got a soft spot for Asian, this is a great place to check out. The food is affordable, and there are tons of dishes to choose from. My Asian food cravings were definitely satisfied. The ladies who served us were lovely and super friendly. This place must be pretty popular, with lots of people dining in and plenty of take-away orders too.

Tasty dishes, good portions, and an authentic Melbournian Chinese. With all the price increases and the hospitality style hype in Melbourne it is getting harder to find a place like this where you get a good quantity of delicious food at a fair price. On a Saturday night I went to Char Siu House with two good friends who recommended this place. We ordered four dishes to share, Battered Sweet-Sour Pork, Fried Rice with salted Fish, Golden Chicken Ribs battered in Salted Duck Egg Yolk, and Beef in Egg Gravy. All dishes tasted incredibly good and hit the spot! Char Siu House is 15 minutes walking distance from the outskirt of the CBD. No queue, no fancy setup, it's just about Chinese food at its best. The place is run by a family who puts all their effort in their meals, hence the serving is quick but is secondary.

Big portion for the price and it’s tasty and fulfilling . But I’m surprised by the wait time seeing that it’s a roast meat meal, which doesn’t require cooking. Order on the hungry panda app, and you receive an additional 15% for pick up! Although prices are a bit more expensive, however if you are a first time user of the app, you will receive $10 off, which is a great deal!

Your typical neighborhood Chinese restaurant with no frills. Wonton noodle soup was okay, nothing indifferent to any other shops. This is the same case for the mix roasts. The spicy chicken rice is like a cross between Sichuan and southeast Asian sambal spicy flavour. The portions are very generous, possibly enough for two meals if you are not a big eater.
